Gorgeous, early 20th century Bereky & Gay Jacobean buffet.
This solid walnut buffet is a pristine example of the esteemed Berkey & Gay brand quality, featuring stunning floral and geometric wooden molding, dovetailed drawer joints, carved turned legs that taper into bun feet, and the original brass maker’s mark.
Bereky & Gay began producing furniture in the mid-1850s in Grand Rapids Michigan. By 1882, a new larger factory was opened, spanning three city blocks. Company sales and operations thrived into the 1920s until The Great Depression forced owners to sell to the Chicago based Simmons Company. The brand continued to produce furniture under the Bereky & Gay name up until the factory was converted for wartime needs during World War II. An attempt was made to resume production following the war, but ultimately closed for good in 1948.
Although the company has been out of operation for over 70 years, the Berkey & Gay name has left a legacy of some of the finest quality furniture manufactured in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
